Most states require employers to provide workers’ compensation coverage for full-time employees. Requirements can and do vary from state to state, however. So it’s important for construction safety professionals to be aware of the different state’s requirements because employers can have multiple locations in different states.
This assignment draws from the textbook readings and lecture video learning materials.
Initial Post (due by Wednesday):
Review the workers’ compensation laws for one of the 50 states in the U.S (not cannot be Maine and cannot be the state where you currently live.) Prior to beginning your research, check the discussion board to see if any states have already been selected and posted about by your classmates; if they have, please select a different state. Summarize the specific benefits the law provides for injured workers. Discuss how the costs of these benefits relate to effective project site safety planning and enforcement of company safety policies.
Responses (due by Sunday):
Respond to two classmates’ posts after you have reviewed the workers’ compensation laws in the state they choose and discuss whether or not you agree with the requirements and criteria around receiving worker’s compensation benefits and provide your reasons why you agree or why you do not agree. Also, discuss one improvement would make in the requirements and/or criteria with a reason why you would make that improvement.
