Shoring is used during excavation work to prevent cave-ins or collapse of the soil walls of the excavation where construction employees will be working. When shoring OSHA requirements are not followed, serious injuries and fatalities can and do occur. This discussion provides students with an opportunity to delve into shoring systems that are used in excavation work.
Initial post (due by Wednesday):
Research two types of shoring systems (provide links) that can be used in excavation construction work and discuss two advantages and two disadvantages of using each system.
Also with excavation work and the need for shoring being project characteristics that are critical to pre-project planning, discuss why they are critical and identify at least two risks involved if they are not identified/addressed during the pre-project planning activity.
Responses (due by Sunday):
Respond to two classmates and discuss how the listed advantages outweigh the listed disadvantages. Would you recommend one shoring system over the other, why?
Rank the risks based on your opinion of likelihood and severity. What is your rationale for the ranking and how do you anticipate others disagreeing with your ranking?
