Week 4 Discussion: Using Fall Protection During Roof Work

While OSHA’s regulations are indeed the “law,” industry professionals sometimes have their own ideas and opinions on aspects of OSHA’s regulations, such as the frequency of training or evaluation criteria for competent persons, the list goes on. In the construction industry, construction safety professionals regularly gather remotely or in-person to share/debate these ideas and opinions, which generate good insight, perspectives and in some cases, even best practices. Forums include society or association meetings, lunch and learns, and roundtable discussions at seminars. For this discussion, we will look at a specific construction project example and how to attribute liability associated with this work.

Discussion: Think about constructing a steep-pitch roof and the work that is done on the leading edge. Research the OSHA standards that are applicable to leading-edge work regarding who has custody of fall protection equipment.

  • You will be divided into two groups for a discussion debate.
  • Last name A-H represents entity 1
  • Last name H-Z represents entity 2
  • You will debate why the other group should be the entity charged with custody of fall protection equipment.

Initial post (due by Wednesday):

State why the other entity should bear the responsibility. Provide three reasons.

Responses (due by Sunday):

Choose two posts, one from your entity and one from the opposing entity. Reinforce your entity’s stance by expanding your colleague’s justification or adding further evidence, then refute the other entity’s reasoning by providing other insights.
