Per OSHA, historically the term "accident" was often used when referring to an unplanned, unwanted event. The term "accident" can suggest that an event that was random, and could not have been prevented. Since nearly all worksite fatalities, injuries, and illnesses are preventable, OSHA suggests using the term "incident" instead of “accident.” Based the context of the word “accident,” there can be a lack of accountability implied when injuries occur on the job. It’s important to remember that while safety is everyone’s responsibility, accountability primarily lies with the employer for ensuring a safe workplace is provided for their employees at all times.
